I mean, my friend and I...well we're new.

[ which hopefully will give her some type of leniency with others (though she is doubtful and can only smile somewhat awkwardly because of it) ]

...and I guess we would just like some type of idea what we’re up against here, or maybe where we're all coming from.

[ it's a vague question, and one that she isn't fully sure she will like the answer of. but at least it is something that might get them closer to understanding this whole mess. because lets face it, the natives aren't exactly the most helpful of people. ]

We're probably from different worlds altogether. I'm not certain exactly how it works, but a lot of people here are from lands I've never even heard of.

I mean, not all of us are even from the same universe, it's probably not too far-fetched to think we might also be from different times.

The year depends on who you're asking - there are a lot of people from different worlds and times.

However, the calender here seems to run along a more Eastern than Western one. As for year? I'm not sure.

And when you say Eastern, how much so? [ she has a rough idea of course, but asking for clarification seems to be a good idea here. ]
