001 - Video

[The girl on the screen is tiny, likely barely more than 12. Her arms are folded across her chest, and her eyes, pale, seem to glare at the screen.]

[. . . Kind of. There’s also something a little off about that glare. It doesn’t quite seem to focus like a glare should.]

Okay, so whose bright idea was it to put dirt on some of the turtle shell, but not all of it? If you’re going to put dirt on a turtle in the first place, you should at least not be stupid about it and finish it off.

Also, what kind of turtle are we talking about here? Is this a turtle-duck, or a lion-turtle, or what? I tried to ask one of those kedan guys, but they wouldn’t tell me.

[A small smirk, highly self-satisfied.]

Guess they were still sore.

[She shrugs.] Anyway, name’s Toph for anyone who cares. You’ll learn it soon enough.

Magic? Not really.

[The rocks slide back into one whole, and Toph pockets the lump.]

I don't know how to explain it. It's something people are born with where I'm from. Some people can do it, and some people can't. It's got a lot to do with will, though, and the right stances. Flow of energy through the body.

Aang could probably explain the energy stuff. Maybe Korra too.

[A flicker of something unnamed passes through her face. She hasn't really taken much time to absorb the separation from her friends. It's just a flicker, though, and gone in an instant.]

If she's as nerdy as Aang, though, she'll know about it.

I did meet Korra when she first arrived. I didn't really understand what she was talking about, though. [ Something to do with Avatars, who even knows. ]

I don't know if she's nerdy, though. Is Aang a friend of yours?

Yeah. I guess it'd be kind of complicated if you weren't used to it. Probably some kind of stuff about being the Avatar?

[A half-wistful grin.] And yeah, Aang's a friend. He and some others are still home. Old story here, I bet.

Yeah, something like that.

[ She smiles sympathetically, though there's no real need to. ]

Sometimes friends show up. None of mine have.
