VIDEO || Javert wastes zero time

[A man whom the citizens of Tu Vishan might have glimpsed on occasion fixes a piercing, sharp gaze into the feed. The man is incredibly neat, uncharacteristically clean-shaven, and stern almost to the point of lacking any emotional inflection.

--Save for an unusual trembling tic in his lip when he speaks, and the slight off-center tie of his neck scarf. That indicated, to anyone close enough to be familiar with his habits, that some tremendous excitement boils within him. A hunger sparks deep in his pupils. He speaks at last after a few moments' pause, as if to let the gravity of his expression sink in, and his tone is curt, blunt, and commanding.]

I am looking for any man or woman interested in the case of the recently slashed Madame Emperor.

Who is working on it immediately? I have got the precinct local dossier; so do many of you. But I am sure there are people that have seen more than that. I tell you now to come forward, do not keep it quiet. It is a useless waste to keep the investigations separate. Let us pool the evidence and put our skulls together.

My name is Javert. I am somewhat familiar with kedan police policies, I have spent some time with them. You must call for me quick. I will speak with any that have got something to add.

video | the alderwood emperor

[The video comes up not with the backdrop of the Commander's office, but instead that of the Emperor's personal quarters. It is Alderwood that sits there, his expression dark and controlled; there are signs of grief in the redness of his eyes same as there are signs of activity in the motion of police kedan behind him, but he ignores that to address the network.]

The Ironwood Emperor is-- [Here, he breaks a moment before the line of his jaw settles with stonelike strength and he continues.] She is dead.

[Centuries of war that she survived, centuries of difficulties, and he found her as innocently dead as a victim in a murder. Evandau appears torn, once again on the brink of the grief that threatens to consume him, but he forces himself into mould of a Commander so that he might serve the purpose of this message.]

The sealed scroll outlining her succession was opened this morning under my authority as Commander. [His hand moves, briefly touching a rolled up scroll set on the flat surface before withdrawing as though burned.] It was her wish that I assume all authorities and responsibilities as Emperor after her passing.

[His look is pained, but does not break.]

Henceforth, I assume the role of Alderwood Emperor and thusly fulfill her wishes. The responsibilites of the Commander will continue with me until I choose a successor.

[A pause, a breath as he composes his next words.]

The Palace of Landed Sky is closed to all petitioners until further notice. Without Eshai's power protecting it, this is no longer a safe haven for those that wish to speak its name, so do not risk it.

[For he already suspects that Malicant is behind this and will not have it invited in to make a pair of he and Eshai in death.

That brings him to the end of what he needed to announce and so he only offers one flat statement in closing.]

This changes nothing of your presence or purpose, so do not come beg of return. Those magicks are beyond me and my priority is determining what fool made the decision to kill her.

I haven't seen many new faces in the last while - but if you don't know me, I'm the Headmaster, so if you want to get involved in the school, we should talk. Things have been rather hectic lately, but I hope we can keep everything running smoothly.

[He looks down for a moment.]

Which brings me to a...more personal concern, I suppose. [He isn't used to addressing the network on such issues. Most of his posts have been announcement style, because he's so used to keeping his public image official.]

There are a lot of concerning issues brought up by the Emperor's recent announcement, to say the least. But I have to wonder, specifically, about being sent home. If we are returned back to the point we were taken from, I only have a short time left to live, and I can't be the only one in that situation. Has anyone investigated the possibility of alternative options? Would you want to take such an option, if you could?

video; on archery and mally investigation stuff

[ Iorveth doesn't often do these things, mostly because he basically hates everyone, but there's something to be said for the moment. He's working with something on the keyboard of the console, speaking while he looks down. Occasionally you might see an arrow lifted into view while he's crafting them. He speaks frankly - not harsh at this point (yet) but just blank. ]

There is a war that is no longer coming but here. If you don't know how to fight, I suggest you learn. Anyone able to craft weapons may want to build an armory.

[ There's a sigh here and he looks like this is so painful for him to do, voice excessively bland ] If there are any that wish to learn archery... [ ugh it hurts ] I'd be willing to teach.

[ This added in with a squint and so much condescension. ] Given that you aren't so obnoxious that I'd rather put an arrow through your eye than have to meet with you regularly.

[ That's all for now. He has been teaching archery for over a century, so you'd get something out of it, but that's only if you can put up with him during :'| ]

[ private to his investigation team; unhackable because leo helped him this time BT ]

Has anyone made headway on the journal, or learned anything new? We will be edging on desperate very soon if this thing begins it's attack sooner rather than later.

For those who have missed information, we have compiled findings here. [ a document attached with findings things, look at him, doing all this crazy computer shit. how fancy. ty leo. And here he lets out a tired exhale, like it's almost boring giving this threat by now. ] As per usual, share this information and I will find you and I will kill you. If we have a plan that may actually work to save our hopeless hides, I doubt it needs to be said that it will be disasterous if the information is leaked and our enemy catches on.

[ and betrayal isn't something he does well with oops. not that he'll have much of a way of knowing who it was, but it's not a iorveth post unless he's threatening to kill some peeps ] It's said now because I would like to be explicitly clear on that point so that there will be no surprise when I skin anyone who releases it.

Use this encryption if responding; the demigod child is providing it. [ he doesn't remember your name, Leo, sry ]

[[ ooc; on the gdoc, feel free to edit in anything that's missing, and if you have any questions, hit me up at Wuzzafuzzle on aim or plurk. As far as the info on there goes, ICly only the WHAT WE KNOW info would be viewable. The list of people in on the team below that is just to keep straight who is in the know and etc etc. If you want in on investigation stuff, just let me know! [With Ariadne most definitely gone - awake, presumably, though Arthur still can't figure out how she could've woken up but he still can't - Arthur is now alone in this place.

In some ways, being alone opens up certain possibilities that he wouldn't have considered available as long as others were here that he needed to protect. It's just him, and he knows how to look after himself, and he doesn't have to worry about keeping stories straight or anything like that.

Besides, the dream hasn't collapsed yet; what's a few more projections knowing some things?]

I want to get in touch with anyone who had knowledge of those archways in Sinbrilee. [He still disdains the whole idea of magic, but it's clearly a delusion he'll have to work with for the time being.] Especially the dreaming ones.

There are some, ah, tests that I'd like to run.

[Eshai looks, for lack of a better word, like hell. She's been holed up in her palace, but oh, she has not been idle, and the dark bruises beneath her eyes tell a story of sleepless nights and candles burnt at both ends. Her elbows are braced on the desk, and the style of her clothing is very much severe and lacking in ornamentation, her sleeves are rolled to her biceps.

She gives the camera a glare, and then reaches up to tuck a wisp of graying hair behind one ear.]

I've expanded and strengthened the barrier. I don't yet have the exact dimensions, so if anyone who can fly or swim would like to do some exploring for me, I would consider it very much a-- [her mouth ticks into a firm, unhappy frown] -- personal favour. It should extend down to the ocean floor, and upwards nearly to the mesosphere. Outward directions are where I lack the most data, but any measurements are helpful.

I will not mince words. Our enemy has gained a foothold in Keeliai. It's my hope that this will keep it at bay a while longer. Additionally, this will allow us greater access to the mainland areas we come in contact with. Asti, [Her expression shows her displeasure at the populace now knowing and freely using that name.] is headed for colder waters, but with the increased scope of the barrier, we'll be seeing land more often. Those of you who can fly, or design mechanical boats or flying crafts, you should be on the lookout for any opportunities. With the creature freed, and wreaking havoc among the realm of Life, you can expect to see war and destruction wherever we make contact with the outside. Be prepared for it.

[Someone off screen hands her a cup of something that steams faintly, she takes it with a nod of thanks, but does not drink.]

As I'm certain some of you've been whispering about in dark corners, no. You are not the first group of individuals I've brought to Keeliai. The kedan were the first, that was centuries ago. There have been other sets of heroes. The last time was when Sinbrilee sank, and I thought...

[Her brow creases. She takes a drink, now, of that steaming beverage.]

Perhaps the enemy was defeated at that time. Eighteen months ago, I was proven incorrect. You may not be here because you want to be or would otherwise choose to be, but the enemy will not stop with Konryu. It has tarried here, because the life energy provided by the Great Turtles satiates it like nothing ever has. It wants Asti, but once it's killed him, it will move on to other worlds. Across the fabric of space and time, it will come to where each of you live in turn. It may be centuries before you're born, or millennia after you've died, but it will come. You want to know why you're here? That's why. We are making a stand. I have done my best to keep you safe, but believe me when I say your lives are insignificant compared to Asti's, and if what it takes to stop our enemy is the blood sacrifice of each and every one of you, I will do it unflinching.

But if you survive, by some miracle, I have put certain... failsafes in place, that will send each of you home. This assumes that I do not survive the coming battle. Should I, I will return each of you to your homeworlds personally. You have my word. If we all die, well. It renders the consideration moot. Bodies are in rather short supply after the destruction of our cloning facilities, so to those of you assuming recklessness is the answer, consider this. When you die here, it falls to me to anchor your soul and bring you back. And there are those among you that have done little to endear yourselves to me. Sell your lives dearly if you must, but do not be fools.

And for the love of turtles, if any of you so much as think to ask me the same useless million questions because you cannot think to collaborate or share your knowledge, I will keelhaul those responsible. I trust we understand one another.

[IC ADDENDUM]

I was reminded, the barriers will now glow the nearer you get to them. It benefits all of us if no one manages to drown. The colour will be different for everyone, so be on the lookout for it.

[ooc note: The barrier is now roughly fifty miles out horizontally, so feel free to ICly shuck that knowledge around]

[ Look who’s back, and while elf-man here hasn’t seen network posts for the last month, he sure as hell did get word from Una and Vanessa that you guys were shooting your mouths off about that thing he told you guys not to shoot your mouths off about and now everything sucks and he hates you. More than he hated you all before. Aka: Iorveth is pissed because it’s a day that ends in Y, didn’t you miss him? ]

I’d like to give a heartfelt congratulations to those brilliant few who invited our enemy to our doorstep. Well done, you incredible imbeciles. [ This complete with Iorveth Patent douche clap.

Talkin ‘bout everyone that said Malicant on the network after he goddamn told you not to, and after everyone argued that him keeping it to himself was a terrible thing to do. For this exact reason, the same thing he’d told everyone. You’re all morons and I don’t trust the vast majority of you to keep your goddamn mouths shut.

He’s blaming you for this, Kirk. ]

I sincerely hope the beast gets to you first, when the attack comes. [ there’s a serious rage here - this is why he fucking hates people. ] I’d do it myself, but I have more pressing matters to lend attention to than flaying you alive and hanging your carcass out in the open market. Oh for the lack of leisure time.

[ Spat, because yeah, that would be fun for him. Moving on.]

Those who know they have my trust should meet to speak with me where we have before. [ that burnt out village they had their last meet up in - lookin’ at you, investigation sneaky team. ] We must discuss what’s been found.

[ Not even bothering making that private (the part that there’s a discussion and there’s also something important he knows), because he’d like you all to know that yes he’s withholding important information again, and there’s going to be zero chance of prying it out of him this time. Not like before. ]

Yaha, Aisha - come to my home.

[ and his private treehaus better still be there :| end feed ]

Tonight's the Night - 01 - [video]

[ Dexter takes a seat in front of the console, adjusting the camera so his upper body is centered in its view. His first matter of business, before recording any sort of video, is to protect his computer. Passwords, highly encrypted, as much privacy as possible - things like this are important for a man like Dexter Morgan. If information about potential victims is going to be kept on this machine, it needs to be only viewable to Dexter's eyes.

It doesn't take long to get everything in order before he turns his attention back to making some sort of video asking for information he wasn't given upon arrival. The important things. He adjusts the camera again, clearing his throat before pressing record. ]

I'm sort-of new.

[ A pause ]

And I have three questions that need to be answered. Important questions.
First, where is the police station located? I work in forensics and I'd like a job as soon as possible. I get... bored without something to do.

[ I also need a way to get information on people, learn the ropes, things like that. Working at Miami Metro was such a useful tool. ]

Second, is there a good donut shop around here? Sadie's Donuts and Coffee was a Miami thing, so I'm guessing that doesn't exist here. But, donuts are a necessity.
And, third, where can I get a pulled pork sandwich? A good one, preferably Cuban, but I can make do if that's not an option.

[ Dexter pauses again, giving the camera a forced smile ]

I'd appreciate the help. Uh, thanks... I guess.

[The box-- a computer, she was told, is omitting some sort of light, and Eponine looks at it, her face angled away, her eyes narrowed and her lips parted slightly. She doesn't trust it. But, she was told, that was how you communicated here. When you didn't find people face to face. Reaching out, she raps her hand against the screen, gasping at the hollow sound.] So strange, this computer! I don't understand it. There isn't anything like this in Paris, yet here… In this strange sort of city-- I was told it is not heaven or the hell that I deserve, but rather a city in the In Between. I can only liken it to purgatory, which is better than what I expected. [Her voice is low and hoarse, not fitting for the seventeen-year-old girl that she is at all. Then again, her age is hard to pinpoint in and of itself.]

I'm dead. They said perhaps I was, but I know better. I remember life leaving my body, and… [She pauses, looking away, her eyes fixed at a far-off point, the ghost of a smile forming on her lips.] and I remember his lips pressed against my forehead as I passed. Oh, I am dead, don't try to tell me that I am not, whomever it is I'm speaking to. It's so strange, I'm speaking into a box, and others are supposed to hear me! [She tosses her head back and laughs.]

What a strange, strange world this is. Heaven or Hell or In Between, perhaps it is all the same. They said it was an In Between. Why am I not in hell? All who know me know that's where I belong. I do not belong here, and yet, [she gestures.] here I am. Is it not a wonder?

First Atom; Video

[The visage of a man comes onto the screen. He is unfamiliar but fascinated by the technology of the computer terminals. However, that is not the pressing topic at hand. ]

Greetings. My name is Robert Lutece and I arrived here yesterday with my sister Rosalind. She and I are both scientists and will be converting her suite into a laboratory, therefore we have no need for the furniture in her residence. We will be offering it to whoever is interested.

[He sits and waits in front of the computer terminal, looking rather calm with his eyebrows slightly raised. They just sit that way naturally, default expression that gives a general appearance of being constantly unamused.

It's her turn to talk now. Though this would be a little easier if they were reporting from the same terminal.]

SIXTH POST [VIDEO]

Let me repeat what others have said- names have power. Particularly the name of our enemy. Don't speak it or produce it in text or writing unless absolutely necessary. And if you think you're clever or brave for going around shouting that name, I'll put you under a silencing spell so powerful you won't be able to speak again for months. [Sabriel is Not Happy, and actually a little bit scared.]

I have a request- There's an object I found in Sinbrilee- a stone monolith from my world, called a Charter Stone. I need someone with exceptional strength to help me move it- you'll be compensated for your trouble, of course. [And with Malicant's post, Sabriel is eager to get it to a place where she and her students can easily draw on its strength if neccessary.]

I'm also happy to say that I'll be teaching magic at the new school that's opening soon, along with English and music, if people are interested in learning. Timothy Drake, your father told met that you might be interested in studying magic?

[Locked to her students, default encyrption]

I found several more books about Charter Magic during my stay- as well as a Paperwing, although given what's happened, I'd rather teach you about protective spells and wards, rather than weather charms. And once the Charter stone is moved into Keeliai, we'll have a greater source of power to draw from.

[While he was only here for the tail end of Malicant's previous visit, he had heard enough from Javert in therapy that he knew who the mysterious message was from and felt some sense of joy (giddiness, perhaps, if Hannibal were ever willing to describe his own feelings with that word) that he may not be quite gone.]

Dearest Malicant -

Such a lovely voice you have; it was good to be able to hear it after all. I figured I had missed my chance. But, it was rather rude to grace us with your message and not give us a chance to reply. I of all people understand the need to remain elusive and there is certainly something to be said about fear of the unknown. And yet, if you are not careful it may start to look more like desperate avoidance.

I am aware that this message might never reach you, but if you should see it: consider this my personal invitation to come out and play, so that we might appreciate your art.

004 | voice, tw: references to psychological torture

[The post is the first word from anyone in Team 7 since a few days before the 13th, and unusual for Temeraire in more than a few ways: the feed is audio only, for one, and when he speaks, for another, his voice is hesitant, slow, and clearly shaken.]

This is--

This is hardly the best time to say this, in light of all our recent difficulties, with these creatures, and I do not know where to begin--I must beg your pardon, but--

--it came for us.

[He falls silent. An astute listener might notice significantly less trilling coming from the feed than most broadcasts on the network: he has been taking out his frustration on the tribbles, and his apartment is, for the moment, mostly tribble-free. Well, mostly free of living tribbles. Pity, really, since it sounds like he might have needed the calming effect.

He takes a deep breath, and tries again.]

We were in the palace--there were interrogations to be conducted, on behalf of Evandau--and it came for us. It took us--

[Silence again. Clearly he is choosing all the wrong places to begin, and it is some time before he resumes with:] Annabeth spoke of a realm of Death, in her last post, and what I saw, for a moment, was very like her description. In any case--there is no question that is its country; that it may do whatever it likes to whomever is unfortunate enough to enter it; and that what occurs in that realm, however fleeting the event, feels as real and vivid as if it had occurred in this reality.

I know that we must fight it regardless, but I fear I cannot imagine how.

[And this time there is only a moment of silence before he lets out a quavering breath, and cuts the feed. Any responses to the post come several hours later.]

It seems as if the immediate danger has ceased somewhat and furthermore I've gotten more settled in, so, as of today I will be taking appointments for therapy. The price will be fifteen juulan per session and both day and evening times will be available.

While I was unfortunately not brought here with my degrees and certifications, I assure you that I have many years of experience in this field and take the matter of patient confidentiality very seriously. Nothing said to me during these sessions will be repeated anywhere else.

All sessions will be held on the first floor of my suite in the fire sector - in building FI-3C. If you would like to make an appointment I suggest that you contact me privately. Any questions or concerns you might have are of course welcome, as well.

[When the feed clicks on, Lin is seated in her Earth Sector apartment.]

Good afternoon. My name is Lin. [Anyone from Republic City who's used to hearing her speak will catch the barest of hesitations both here and throughout the broadcast: she's being exceedingly careful about what she's saying. To anyone else, however, they might well be taken for normal pauses in speech.]

As you can no doubt guess, I'm another one of your new arrivals. My welcome party told me I needed to find a job here, but they were light on the details. Under normal circumstances, I'd offer my services as an earthbender, but given the state of this--turtle?--it's probably out of the question.

What I can offer is some thirty years' experience on the police force of a large city, with a good portion of that time spent as chief. I'm willing to start at the bottom and work my way up--that won't be a problem.

[Hannibal stands centered in front of the camera, looking oddly calm and not disheveled in the slightest.]

I suppose I should make a proper introduction, and this seems the best way to do it although it's dreadfully impersonal.

I am Dr. Hannibal Lecter. I'm a psychiatrist, and was a physician for many years before my retirement from that field. However, if I've understood correctly we are facing some difficult times here, so I am happy to offer my medical services if needed. A shame about the rationing, too. [Jim's sitting in his suite, wearing his command golds, looking serious as a heart attack. He's leaning forward, one hand braced against the armrest of his chair, the other fiddling with something on the console. Satisfied, he leans back more fully and nods once to the camera.]

Okay, let's get the introductions out of the way first. Name's Jim, Jim Kirk. Captain of the USS Enterprise. I serve in Starfleet in the year 2259 - Starfleet being a space-based armada focused on peaceful exploration and the discovery of new forms of life in the universe.

[There's a slight quirk to his brow, he coughs and then continues with all due charisma,]

I know there's people out there that've been here longer than I have, so I'm asking for your help - and the assistance of anyone willing. We know we're here to fight something, some of you know what and why. While I can understand the reasoning behind keeping that information to allies, I'd like to stress the fact that we're all in this together, regardless of worlds, races or creeds. This isn't something we can or should fight blind. So I'm proposing a broader alliance, a centralized repository of information, and the consideration of a unified front to face whatever's coming.

Additionally, I'm interested in the martial capabilities of the landed foreigners, any contingency plans that have been put in place to deal with the situations we're potentially facing here, and the sorts of scenarios that've been dealt with in the past.

[He exhales a little more sharply than necessary, and then he gives the camera a brief, two-fingered salute.]

Kirk out.

[Javert is well groomed, neat, and absolutely professional today. His bangs are combed well over the Charter Mark on his forehead, a trait unbefitting of a man attempting to play Messenger for the authorities. He holds his chin high for the camera, his steely eyes ready to lance straight through the screen and into the viewer's bare conscience.

He speaks in swift, abrupt phrases, with just a hint of a French accent in his clipped vowels.]

Lately I got word of many confusing arrests among us. Trespassing cases among people who were unaware of city limits, unclear boundaries, all of that! Ah! That is inefficient. Foreigners cannot expect to follow local customs if we do not know them.

[Pause. Of course, this is leading up to something, yet it is clear that Javert makes a poor public figure, with the impression he is making. He taps his fingers and grimaces ever deeper as he quickens his speech.]

Of course there are a clear system of laws written for this society like any other. But do not bother to dig up a book vendor if you do not understand French, English, or the local language. Impossible task, translating into every possible tongue! We will not waste the time.

Rather you will find a full voice record of the Keeliai law code available for public use.

[VOICE FILE ATTACHED; split into several subheadings and articles, much like any civil or common law code one would find on the planet Earth.]

[Javert restlessly bends closer to the camera and draws his brows into an indifferent arch.]

I advise that you listen and understand what you are getting into when you cross government boundaries. [That means you, Iorveth, Enjolras, the Amis, and other criminal suspects. He smiles grimly, devoid of all humor.] Among other activities. What you do after that is your concern.

[He lowers his lids with a pinch in his jaw and reaches out to end the feed. He stops short to add as an afterthought--]

A word of thanks to Monsieur Logan for lending his voice.

[The screen goes black.]
